Emirates SkyCargo Approaches 4 Decades of Operations in Africa

By: Aviation source news

As the logistics industry came together in Nairobi at Air Cargo Africa last week, Emirates SkyCargo reaffirmed a nearly 4 decade commitment to the continent.

For nearly 40 years, the global logistics giant has played a pivotal role in bridging African businesses with the world. It has progressively solidified its position as a key facilitator of trade.

A staggering average of 3,820 tonnes of cargo flows in and out of Africa weekly with the carrier. Emirates SkyCargo’s impact on the African continent is undeniable. This robust operation strengthens vital trade lanes, empowering African manufacturers, traders, and exporters to connect seamlessly with global markets.

Africa as a Priority Cargo Market

Khalid Al Hinai, Vice President Cargo Commercial, Emirates SkyCargo – Africa, UAE, and Middle East spoke of the strategic importance of the market sector. “Africa has been a priority market for Emirates SkyCargo since our inaugural flight in 1986,” he said.

“We’ve seen remarkable growth, and we’re incredibly excited about the future. Especially with transformative initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”

AfCFTA, a potential game changer, promises to reshape Africa’s economic landscape, boosting regional and international trade.

Emirates SkyCargo, as a facilitator of trade, is committed to supporting underserved markets and fostering reciprocal economic opportunities. This commitment translates to strong benefits for African businesses seeking to expand their reach.

Emirates SkyCargo Presence Since 1986

The airline’s journey began with a single flight to Cairo, Egypt, in 1986. Since then, it has steadily increased its operations, increasing capacity, hubs, and flight frequencies.

Today, in 2025, Emirates SkyCargo boasts an impressive network, operating eight dedicated freighters and 172 passenger planes. It services 20 destinations across Africa every week.

This extensive network, covering over 145 global destinations, means a swift and efficient movement of goods. This empowers African businesses to import and export with ease.

Cargo Capabilities

Emirates SkyCargo’s role in global trade is indispensable. In 2024 alone, they transported over 91,930 tonnes of perishable goods from African destinations. The coverage highlights their expertise in handling sensitive cargo.

This makes them the leading carrier of perishable goods from the region. From Egyptian strawberries to South African seafood, Tanzanian chilled meat, Ghanaian fruits, and Ugandan bananas, Emirates SkyCargo ensures these products reach consumers worldwide in optimal condition, utilizing ventilated and temperature controlled packaging.

The horticultural sector, particularly in Kenya, exemplifies this commitment. Kenya, a top global flower producer, relies on Emirates SkyCargo’s efficient cool chain logistics.

The airline’s twice weekly freighter service from Nairobi to Maastricht, Netherlands, ensures that fresh cut flowers, like roses and carnations, reach florists within 24 hours, maintaining their pristine quality.

Diversification in African Market

Beyond agriculture, African nations are strategically investing in industrial manufacturing to diversify their economies. This sector, poised for significant growth, is a cornerstone of AfCFTA.

Emirates SkyCargo, with its diverse and specialized product portfolio, is well equipped to support this growth, offering tailored solutions that are fast, reliable, flexible, and efficient.

At Air Cargo Africa, Emirates SkyCargo actively engages in crucial dialogues and knowledge sharing, contributing to the development of the region’s logistics ecosystem.

They stand ready to collaborate with industry leaders, fostering innovation and strengthening supply chains.

In essence, Emirates SkyCargo’s long standing presence in Africa has been a broad partnership – a commitment to connect, empower, and grow alongside the continent’s vibrant economies.
