Nigeria: Village gets power after 18 years of electricity drought

The project is set to serve more than 3,000 members of the community, which has been reportedly without electricity for over 18 years.

The project is deployed through the Federal Government’s Rural Electrification Fund (REF) through the REA. The Uhuafor Nomeh is enveloped in Palm trees and amazing greenery in Nkanu East LGA of Enugu State, Nigeria. Enugu State is found in the southeastern  part of Nigeria, located at the foot of the Udi Plateau.

According to Nigeria’s REA, a total of 51 mini-grids will be constructed to serve unserved and underserved communities nationwide in a bid to sustain their objective of powering Nigeria “one community at a time while catalysing socioeconomic growth in rural Nigeria.”

Governor Peter Mbah, represented by his special adviser on power, Joe Aneke, hailed REA for its continuous dedication to provide sustainable energy solutions to rural areas across the country.

He said the Nomeh electricity project would provide long-term answers to rural populations’ shortage of electricity.

He urged the community to take full use of the initiative and care for the shared asset, citing it as a resource for growth and improvement.

He said the project highlights their shared objective of ensuring that every community in Enugu State, despite geography, has access to clean, dependable and affordable power.

Deployment of renewable energy technologies to provide electricity to rural Nigeria

REA said they’ve sustained the deployment of data-driven and impact-focused renewable energy technologies across the nation.

“Under the 2nd Call of the Federal Government’s REF, the Agency is implementing the deployment of 51 solar mini-grids, impacting lives, homes, businesses, schools and community clinics,” they said.
