A joint statement released by both parties highlighted the importance of this collaboration. The G7 imposed a ban on Russian-origin diamonds in January 2024, and subsequently expanded the ban to include Russian diamonds processed in third countries. To enforce these restrictions, a certification node was established in the EU in March 2024.

Botswana and the G7 diamond technical team have been working closely to identify and address gaps in Botswana’s current diamond certification framework. A comprehensive gap analysis has been conducted, and a roadmap is being developed to ensure the full operationalization of the export certification node in Botswana next year.

President Duma Boko of Botswana emphasized the country’s commitment to ethical and sustainable diamond mining. He highlighted Botswana’s role in pioneering traceability and responsible mining practices, aiming to ensure that its diamonds embody integrity and ethical stewardship.

The establishment of this certification node is expected to strengthen Botswana’s position as a responsible global leader in diamond production, boosting investor confidence and promoting economic growth. The G7 diamond technical team also plans to engage with other African diamond-producing countries, such as Namibia and Angola, to explore the possibility of setting up additional export certification nodes.
