BOSA to picket against Eskom’s proposal for an electricity hike

Build One South Africa’s leader, Mmusi Maimane, will spearhead a picket today against Eskom’s application to the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) for a 36.1% electricity tariff increase.
Eskom has applied to NERSA to approve a 36.1% electricity price hike from April 2025, an 11.8% price increase in 2026 and a 9.1% increase in 2027.
Maimane says the hike would exacerbate financial pressures on South Africans, especially low-income households and small businesses.
The picket will take place outside public hearings at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.
BOSA Spokesperson, Roger Solomons says, “We as BOSA are not saying no to an increase, we’re saying no to a huge increase. We’re recommending a staggered increase approach to rather phase it in for small businesses and low-income households to adjust to the increases.”
“We’re also saying that there should be a strengthened oversight within Eskom. Eskom should be reporting on a quarterly basis to the public on how they are spending their money. We are also calling for enhanced subsidies to make it a bit better and a bit easier for the support for low-income households,” he adds.
