Barrick awards Metso €70m contract for copper processing technology at Lumwana

The value of the order is about €70-million and it is booked in Metso’s minerals segment’s third-quarter order intake.
Metso’s scope of delivery includes key equipment for grinding, flotation, thickening, feeding and filtration.
“The copper concentrate production process in Lumwana has been designed with sustainability and production efficiency in mind, with most of the equipment selected from our ‘Planet Positive’ offering,” Metso deputy CEO and minerals president Markku Teräsvasara said on September 30.
Lumwana is a significant contributor in Barrick’s expanding copper portfolio, which seeks to capitalise on the rapidly increasing demand for copper required for the global energy transition. The project also plays a part in reviving Zambia’s copper industry and contributing to the local economy.
The expansion will turn Lumwana into a major global copper mine, with projected copper production of 240 000 t/y.
