Chamber of Mines calls for multi-stakeholder approach to address illegal mining

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called for a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder approach to effectively address the growing concerns surrounding illegal mining in the country.

This comes after recent clashes between illegal miners and state security personnel at mining sites in Obuasi, Ntotroso, and Kenyase, which resulted in tragic loss of life and injuries.

In a statement issued on Monday (20 January) by the Chamber, Dr. Sulemanu Koney, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, expressed deep sorrow over the incidents, offering condolences to the families of the victims.

He condemned the illegal mining activities, noting that they not only endanger lives but also pose significant risks to the environment and the integrity of Ghana’s mining sector.

“We strongly condemn any form of illegal mining activities, which not only compromise the safety of individuals but also harm the environment and undermine the country’s mining sector,” Dr. Koney said.

The Chamber acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and commended the work of state security agencies in maintaining law and order.

However, it urged the government to adopt a more collaborative and inclusive approach, working with civil society organizations, traditional authorities, and local communities to address the root causes of illegal mining.

“The strategic importance of the mining sector to national development cannot be overemphasized. It is imperative that we all work together to prevent such unfortunate incidents,” Dr. Koney added.

While the Ghana Chamber of Mines continues to advocate for responsible and sustainable mining practices, it also emphasized the need for greater emphasis on public safety and the protection of investments made by legitimate mining companies.

The Chamber urged calm and restraint from the residents of Obuasi, Ntotroso, and Kenyase during this difficult time, encouraging the community to work together for lasting peace and stability in the mining regions.
