B2Gold Completes Phase 2 Expansion of Mali’s Fekola Solar Plant

Canadian mining firm B2Gold has successfully completed the second phase of its Fekola Solar Plant expansion in Mali. . The expansion involves the addition of 22 MW of solar capacity and 12.7 MWh of battery capacity, which will complement the existing power infrastructure at the Fekola mine site and reduce reliance on diesel-generated electricity.
The solar plant expansion aligns with B2Gold’s commitment to energy efficiency and is expected to provide roughly 30% of the site’s total electricity demand while eliminating 63,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent.
“The expansion of the Fekola Solar Plant is a significant initiative in support of B2Gold’s emission reduction target. The expanded facility will allow the Fekola site team to turn off the HFO plant for a portion of the day during times of sufficient solar radiation, a tremendous achievement for B2Gold and a testament to our commitment to implementing renewable energy solutions,” said Ken Jones, Director of Sustainability for B2Gold.
The expansion is expected to deliver significant operational savings while enhancing the project’s economic and environmental performance. The increased use of renewable energy will significantly lower carbon emissions and contribute to Mali’s broader energy goals.
